Here is your regular scheduled update from the Holly Plant Decommissioning Project Team:
Removing asbestos is complicated. It’s not like removing dust off your mother’s picture frame. Prior to removing asbestos, the TRC team has to construct scaffolding all around the structures that contain asbestos. If you look close below, you’ll see thin metal piping that looks like a temporary painters platform.
As a reminder, all power is turned off on Holly Units 2 and 3. Therefore, all of us have to climb up and down the stairs to each job site. We are burning a lot of calories ..
You can see that some of the pipes that have asbestos coating are quite high. Therefore, the platforms need to be raised so that we can safely and carefully remove the asbestos.
This is the bottom of a scaffolding platform.
Luckily, the scaffolding gets a lift to each job site. These pipes are too heavy to travel by stairs.

The big news of the week: Dive Inspection. You may have not known there are water lines that run from Holly to Ladybird Lake. As part of the decommissioning of the Holly Plant, we needed to inspect the seals. This is very important.
First, we needed to remove the intake screen to let the diver into the water line.
The diver needs to perform several equipment and safety checks prior to scuba diving into a water line. Don’t forget the flashlight – the water is very murky!
The TRC team assists the diver.
The diver is in the water .. the TRC team waits on the surface for his report about the water lines.
Additionally, the TRC team has completed the haul road.

Residual oil and water from inside the plant’s various reservoirs continues to be removed and captured:
Waste water used or found on site is treated in an on site treatment facility to near drinking water quality.
Before it is discharged to a city sewer line, the TRC and Austin Energy environmental team are sampling to make sure that water quality meets or is above standards.
Residual oil is stored in drums and containers awaiting transport to a permitted waste disposal facility.

Barricades have been installed to protect children and pedestrians from walking across the haul road. This road is important for the project to remove the asbestos and other materials from the plant. Trucks will not operate between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. during the week, when children are traveling to and from school. However, the trucks will be leaving the site at 7 am. Therefore, anyone parking their cars in the middle of the haul road or blocking the entrance will be towed at the owners expense. All of us appreciate your patience as we remove the plant.
